Another Three Eerie Unsolved Mysteries

Let’s uncover three more of the world’s scariest, creepiest, eeriest unsolved mysteries!

The Bermuda Triangle

1950’s newspaper map of the area

This triangular region of the Atlantic Ocean, loosely defines by points in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda, has become legendary due to the large number of ships and aircraft that have disappeared in its waters.

The triangle first rose to prominence in the mid-twentieth century with newspaper articles listing the mysterious disappearances that have taken place in its waters, the strangest of which – in my humble opinion – the disappearance of Flight 19.

Flight 19 consisted of five torpedo bombers taking part in a training exercise over the Atlantic Ocean. They left Fort Lauderdale on the 5th December 1945 and were never seen again. The official cause was attributed to navigational errors, resulting in each plane running out of fuel and crashing somewhere in the ocean, although many blame the Bermuda Triangle’s mysterious paranormal forces. In an even stranger turn of events, a PBM Mariner plane that was sent on the search and rescue mission also disappeared, along with the 13 man crew. This type of aircraft had a history of explosions caused by vapour leaks, but the strange circumstances of its vanishing has been absorbed into the lore of the Bermuda Triangle.

Explanations range from parallel dimensions to leftover technology from the mythical Atlantis, however skeptics suggest human error, the presence of the Gulf Stream and sudden weather changes are responsible for the many disseverances in the area.

Although there have been many notable vanishings in the area, including the HMS Atlanta and USS Cyclops, investigations by various government and scientific organisations have found no unusual activity that may be behind this strange phenomenon.

The Disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

Malaysia Airlines

Possibly one of the modern day’s biggest mysteries, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 set off from Kuala Lumpur on 8th March 2014 and was set to arrive in Beijing a few hours later. It never arrived and its fate is currently unknown.

Flight 370 lost communications and disappeared from radar, only to reappear on military radar on a completely different flight path. It is thought to have crashed in the southern Indiana Ocean between 8:19 and 09:15 once running out of fuel.

A small handful of fisherman and sailors reported a “burning object” in the sky and debris positively identified as part of the aircraft has since been discovered on the island of Réunion and Mozambique, suggesting that the plane did indeed crash, but the cause of this crash is still a matter of speculation, although theories include:

  • Murder-Suicide by pilot: Some international investigators have pointed to the blame towards the flight’s Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, in an act of deliberate murder-suicide. According to New York magazine, a flight simulator found in Zaharie’s home showed he had simulated a path that closely matched the projected path of MH370. Although this was confirmed by the Malaysian government, it was not considered sinister. Additionally, it’s thought that the plane’s communication was manually switched off.
  • Passenger Involvement: Passenger hijacking has also been put forward as a theory, particularly due to the fact that two men were found to have boarded the flight with stolen passports. These passengers were later identified as Iranian men aged 19 and 29, however, Interpol have concluded that the disseverance was not “a terrorist incident”.
  • Fire Caused by Cargo: MH370 was carrying a consignment of lithium-ion batteries, with have been known to cause fired on other flights.
  • Hypoxia Event: It has been suggested that the aircrafts flight over the Indian Ocean was conducted on autopilot, possibly suggesting the passengers and crew were rendered unconscious, possibly due to decompression. Analysis of the recovered debris suggests that the landing flaps were not extended at the time of the crash, supporting the belief that the aircraft had entered a spiral dive instead of an intentional landing.

Until more is discovered, it’s likely the disappearance of MH370 and the sad loss of its 227 passengers and 12 crew members will remain unsolved.

Area 51

Potential Raiders from the Storm 51 Raid “attempt”

This secretive United Stated Air Force base in Nevada is the centre of UFO lore.

Although the base was only officially acknowledged by the CIA in 2013, it’s been infamous for much longer for apparently housing UFOs and Alien technology – and perhaps even aliens themselves.

What we know for certain is that the base does develop and test experimental aircrafts and weaponry, but everything else has been left up to speculation. Due to it’s apparent secrecy, conspiracy theorists have connected the base to all manner of wacky hijinks including:

  • Hiding real live UFOs for reverse engineering and study
  • Hiding real live aliens
  • Developing time travel, teleportation and weather control
  • Nefarious activities on behalf of the New World Order, Illuminate or Reptilians

In July 2019, the base’s footing in popular culture was further secured with the Storm Area 51 movement, which encouraged the public to descend upon the base and uncover its inner workings. This resulted in two music festivals in the surrounding area which hosted up to 3000 people, while a stubborn 150 appeared at the gates of Area 51. Seven people were arrested and no aliens were found.

If indeed Area 51 is the home of the US governments most delicate activities, it must be one of its worst kept secrets. Unless, of course, its a convenient distraction from what they’re really keeping from us.
